Tombac is a copper, zinc and arsenic alloy.  Technically, it is a type of brass but the ratio of zinc to copper is much higher in tombac than it is in common brass. The metal tends to be quite brittle so it could not be stamped like brass and copper buttons could.  Hence, most tombac buttons are plain faced, but many were hand engraved with various designs such as this one has. Generally speaking, their sizes ranged from 21mm up to 36mm, depending on their application.

Rob, it doesn't appear that there is a backmark...Is that commonplace with these Tombac Buttons

You are correct.  I don't know of any Tombac with a backmarks, but I could be wrong about that. I have never seen one, though.
